Eugene Smith travels back to Japan where he documents the devastating effect of mercury poisoning in coastal communities. Minamata disease, sometimes referred to as Chisso-Minamata disease, is a neurological disease caused by severe mercury poisoning. Signs and symptoms include ataxia, numbness in the hands and feet, general muscle weakness, loss of peripheral vision, and damage to hearing and speech. Minamata is a 2020 drama film directed by Andrew Levitas, based on the book of the same name by Aileen Mioko Smith and Eugene Smith. The film stars Johnny Depp (who also produced) as Smith, an American photographer who documented the effects of mercury poisoning on the citizens of Minamata, Kumamoto, Japan. Heartfelt yet jumbled, Minamata pays uneven tribute to a remarkable real-life story better served by the documentary treatment. Minamata, city, Kumamoto ken (prefecture), southeastern Kyushu, Japan. It is situated near the southern end of Yatsushiro Bay. A company town of the Nippon Chisso Hiryo Company, its main products are chemical fertilizer, carbide, and vinyl chloride. Minamata is a small fishing town on the coast of the Shiranui Sea. Because of its location, townspeople eat a lot of fish. The fish-based diets of the people and cats of Minamata seemed to be the common thread between those showing symptoms, leading scientists to suspect the fish in Minamata Bay were being poisoned. Other symptoms of Minamata disease include muscle weakness, fever, uncontrollable flailing, numbness in the lips, feet and hands, loss of hearing, and loss of peripheral vision. In very severe cases, madness, paralysis, coma, and death can occur within weeks of the first symptoms. When was Minamata disease first discovered? “Minamata” is based on the same-name book about Life magazine war photographer W.
